Taiaha are usually between 5 to 6 feet in length. One end is flat and about two-and-a-half inches wide; this is the striking end and is termed the rau or blade. The other end is carved in the form of a face and tongue, and is known as the ‘arero’ This end is used for stabbing the opponent.
This pendant is shaped like the ‘arero’ or tongue of the Taiaha.
Maori soldiers of great reputation and courage are known as ‘Toas’. ‘Taua’ is the Maori word for ‘War party’. Toa Taua means Warrior.
This carving portrays the mighty warrior spirit or 'tiramaka' clenching a Taiaha with both hands and feet and is symbolic of the fighting force within.
