Manaia Ancestral Bone Necklace - Messenger Guardian

Regular price $58.00 USD

This 66mm x 37mm hand-carved bovine bone pendant is a powerful symbol of Whakapapa (genealogy), acting as a bridge between the wearer and their ancestors. As a traditional Kaitiaki (guardian), it represents the spiritual messenger that carries prayers to the heavens and brings guidance to the physical world.

The Manaia is one of the most significant entities in Maori art, traditionally depicted as a composite being with the head of a bird (spiritual realm), the body of a man (physical realm), and the tail of a fish (emotional/maritime realm). This anatomy signifies the wearer's balance across all planes of existence. Known as the "Invisible Companion," the Manaia is believed to sit upon the shoulder to ward off malevolence. Hand-carved from ethically sourced bone, this taonga is a "living object" that will absorb the wearer's Mauri (life force) over time, maturing from a clinical white to a deep, resonant honey-gold patina—a physical record of the wearer's unique journey and ancestral bond.
