Toa Bone: Honoring Ancient Polynesian Art
Hailing from Taupo, in the heart of New Zealand's North Island, I was introduced to the art of bone carving at a young age by a teacher at my primary school, Whipahihi Primary.
This early passion grew into a deep respect for the intricate styles of traditional tribal bone craft from Polynesia and around the world. Before dedicating myself to this craft full-time, I enjoyed a successful career as an award-winning graphic designer. My journey has since evolved, transforming a passionate hobby into my full-time pursuit of creating unique jewelry and artifacts.
I believe in celebrating these cultures with deep respect and integrity. My work is a tribute to these incredible traditions, crafted with honor for the cultural and spiritual significance they hold. Many of my designs are careful recreations and interpretations of authentic historical pieces currently housed in museums around the world, a practice through which I aim to make these beautiful and ancient art forms accessible to a wider audience.
Each piece is a unique design, drawing inspiration from these ancient artifacts and the timeless artistry of diverse cultures. I am committed to being a responsible creator.
My partner and I are currently based in Sydney, Australia, and preparing for an upcoming relocation to Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. There, I plan to further my artistry by honing my skills with metals such as silver, gold, and brass, expanding my repertoire into new, culturally inspired creations.
