This 85mm x 28mm pendant is hand-carved from ethically sourced cattle bone and features shimmering paua shell accents. It is a rare "taonga" (treasure) that blends two powerful symbols: the native bat (Pekapeka) and the famous 16th-century Opihi Taniwha rock art. As a guardian symbol, or "Kaitiaki," this piece represents the strength of ancestors and a deep spiritual bond with the land of New Zealand.
The design reimagines one of the country's most famous ancient rock drawings into the shape of a bat. In Maori tradition, the Taniwha is a supernatural protector of the water, while the bat represents the ability to navigate through the unknown. By joining them together, the carving becomes a symbol of protection and tribal identity. The bone is polished to a high shine and is designed to absorb the wearer’s "Mauri" (life force), eventually turning a beautiful honey-gold color as it is passed down through generations.
