Hei Matau Te Rerenga Wai
'The Flowing of Water'

This contemporary Hei Matau, meticulously hand-carved from cattle bone, measures 123mm in height and 33mm in width.  Its elegant form, reminiscent of the ceaseless motion of water, embodies the dynamism and interconnectedness of the natural world.

Three circular paua shell inlays adorn this striking piece. In Maori cosmology, the circle represents the eternal cycle of life and the interconnectedness of all things. The number three holds significance in Maori culture, often associated with important spiritual concepts and natural phenomena. Here, the three paua shell inlays may symbolize the three baskets of knowledge – kete Aronui, kete Tuauri, and kete Tuatea – representing knowledge of the world, emotions, and the spiritual realm, respectively.

A koru, carved into the base of the pendant, further emphasizes the themes of growth, new beginnings, and the cyclical nature of life.

Symbolism and Significance

The Hei Matau, traditionally a symbol of prosperity, abundance, and safe passage over water, finds renewed meaning in this contemporary interpretation.  It serves as a reminder of humanity's connection to the natural world, the importance of respecting and preserving its resources, and the enduring power of Maori traditions.

This piece invites the wearer to embrace the flow of life, to navigate its challenges with grace and resilience, and to appreciate the interconnectedness of all living things.
