This 110mm x 80mm hook (Hei Matau) is a carefully made replica based on drawings from the 1700s. It combines a dark wooden body with a polished cow bone tip and features a carved "Tekoteko" guardian.
The design is inspired by sketches made by artists during Captain James Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific between 1769 and 1771. It shows the style of that era by mixing wood and bone into a single piece. The carved ancestor figure with shimmering paua shell eyes was a detail often recorded by early explorers, representing the spiritual protection given to travelers and navigators.
