Hei Matau (Fish Hook)

This meticulously crafted reproduction is a traditional early 19th-century Maori fishhook, known as a matau, inspired by an original piece housed at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, France. The matau is skillfully carved from wood and finished with a bone point featuring six barbs. A binding of plant fibers connects the wooden hook to the bone point, replicating the authentic techniques used by Maori artisans.

Dimensions: 80mm x 47mm x 12mm

The Hei Matau, also known as a fish hook pendant, is a traditional Maori symbol that holds deep cultural significance. In Maori culture, the fish hook represents prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. It is also a symbol of strength, determination, and self-reliance. The Hei Matau is often worn as a pendant or necklace, and is believed to bring good luck and protect the wearer from harm.
