NZ Māori Hei Matau Bone Necklace - Hand Carved Fish Hook for Safe Travel and Prosperity

Regular price $42.00 USD

A Maori Hei Matau (fish hook) pendant hand-carved from ethically sourced bovine bone. This traditional piece measures 78 mm by 35 mm, features intricate Koru spiral relief engravings, and is accented with a natural New Zealand Paua shell inlay at the base of the barb.

This piece represents the traditional Maori Hei Matau (fish hook), a motif carved to signify strength, abundance, prosperity, and safe passage over water.

The Hei Matau is hand-carved from sustainable, cattle bone. The lower dynamic curve of the hook features relief carvings of the Koru (unfurling fern frond), representing new beginnings, growth, and peace. A circular inlay of iridescent Paua shell is set directly into the base of the barb.

Over time, this porous organic medium naturally absorbs the oils of the wearer, gradually shifting from a polished white finish to a characteristically rich, honey-gold patina. It is suspended from a durable, black cord featuring adjustable slip knots for variable display lengths.
